Keeping Your Dog Safe & Happy on Bonfire Night – Advice from K9-Club Doggy Daycare

dogs on bonfire night

Bonfire Night can be lots of fun for us humans — fireworks, sparklers, and celebrations everywhere! But for our four-legged friends, it can be one of the scariest nights of the year. At K9-Club Doggy Daycare, we want every pup to feel safe, calm, and cared for — so we’ve put together our top tips to help your dog through the fireworks season.

1. Create a Safe Space at Home

Set up a quiet, cosy spot for your dog to retreat to. Close the curtains, dim the lights, and add familiar blankets or toys that smell like home. Some dogs feel safer in a den-like area — a covered crate or a corner behind furniture can work wonders.

K9-Club tip: Play calming music or white noise to help mask the sounds of fireworks.

2. Keep Walks Early and Secure

Take your dog for a long walk before dark, ideally before the fireworks begin. This gives them a chance to burn off energy and do their business before the noise starts.

Always keep your dog on a lead during this time — even the most confident dogs can panic and bolt when frightened by sudden bangs.

3. Close Windows, Curtains & Doors

Keep all windows and doors shut to reduce noise and prevent escape attempts. It’s also a good idea to draw curtains or blinds to block out flashes of light that can startle your pup.

4. Stay Calm and Comfort Them

Dogs pick up on our emotions. Stay relaxed, speak gently, and offer reassurance if your dog comes to you for comfort. Some dogs prefer to hide — that’s okay too! Let them choose what makes them feel safe.

Remember: You can’t “spoil” a dog by comforting them — you’re helping them feel secure.

5. Distraction is Your Friend

Try interactive toys, long-lasting chews, or treat-filled puzzles to keep your dog focused on something positive. Frozen Kongs or lick mats can be great tools for distraction.

6. Consider Calming Aids (If Needed)

If your dog really struggles during fireworks, talk to your vet about natural calming aids or prescription options. There are also pheromone diffusers, calming collars, and supplements that can help.

7. Book a Fun Day at K9-Club!

If you know Bonfire Night will be noisy near your home, why not treat your dog to a day of fun and play at K9-Club Doggy Daycare?
